The other day, there was this anime manga called "One Piece" on TV.
Alright, I was watching TV with one eye and working on my computer with the other eye (such a shame I only got two!)... when the voice of a cartoon speaker caught the other half of my attention:
"The third game will be the Rollerskate Raaace!"
I was amused to discover, in listening to the rules and watching the explanative animation, that the race was a not-so-distant relative of Roller Derby! There are some strange similarities both in the rules and in the looks of the players...

I tried to sort this out with a little search on the Internet:
The Rollerskate Race is part of the Davy Back Fight, a traditional pirate game meant to strengthen the crews by picking up a member of the opposite team each time your team wins a challenge.
In the original paper version, the DBF is divided into three challenges. To our greatest pleasure, the animated version was completed with three extra challenges, including the "Round Around" Rollerskate Race.
Bench Managing and Roster making |
Here are the main rules I managed to combine through different sources:
The race is divided into 5 rounds of 5 minutes each.If a team gets three wins, the game is automatically over.Since it's a 5-round game, the odd numbers are the most important.
Each team is made of one point-getter and four defenders. Each team member can only be a point-getter once, point-getters change at each round. The defenders can be offensive or defensive and any hit is allowed! The manager and coach from each team cannot take part in the race directly.
At the first whistle blow, the two point-getters go.After 20 seconds, there is a second whistle blow for the defenders to go.You win the round when your point-getter is leading at the end of the 5 minutes. Being in front by one footlength is enough to win.
Players are not allowed to skate backwards or outside the ring, or they immediately lose the round. They are not allowed to fly either.
You can have a look by yourself in checking the episode 213 from 3'40 for the whole sequence, or at 4'55 for the rules explanation!
